Praying for your safety, Jonathan. You are brave to document this insanity. It is absurd to see that those who believe words are violence have destroyed physical safety within ivory towers.

Call out Columbia’s new DIE President Minouche Shafik. Less than a year on the job, she is competing hard against Gay, Magill, and Kornbluth for the worlds most destructive, craven, and incompetent university leader. Shafik is a classic commissar whose demoralized resume includes the Gates Foundation, World Bank, IMF, Georgetown, Penn, Oxford, and LSE. The longer you spend in these institutions, the more your spine soul and brain rot away.

Minouche Shafik is a Trojan horse who was appointed as Columbia's president mainly because she had the right DEI demographics (female, Egyptian-born, Muslim, and an authentic British Baroness). A Baroness! And once she was in place at Columbia, she was in the perfect position to turn a blind eye to all the Jew-Hatred exploding under her impressive nose.

Do you know why Minouche couldn't testify before Congress as her three bosom buddies did last December? Because she had the perfect excuse. She was hard at work, attending a conference in Dubai. That's right -- Dubai! Swimming pools. Movie stars. Hamas terrorists. Biblical floods.

Last week, Minouche's answers were well-rehearsed, bumbling and/or evasive. Sometimes, all three. When she was asked whether that rabid Islamist professor Joseph Massad was still on board, she lied. Lied! Before the US Congress!

Now it's time to send the Her Ladyship packing. Maybe she and Claudine can head off on a girls-only adventure. Disneyland should be perfect this time of year.

If you listened to her testimony before Congress, you would know that President Shafik is an Egyptian Copt not Muslim and that in 1966 her family’s assets were seized by Nasser’s dictatorship and her family fled the country, finding safety and a chance to start anew in the American South.

It’s easy to talk about taking immediate strong-appearing actions, locking students up and all the rest. We are on the sidelines and don’t risk any consequences. One thing that needs to be examined is what seems to be a nationwide coordination of the protests (beginning with letters the day after the October 7 massacres blaming Israel). If there’s coordination, how is behind it and financing it needs to be uncovered.

Most Universities are entering finals and the view appears to be, just get through Commencement and then you have the summer to review failures and clarify procedures. As it stands, the 108 arrested Columbia students have severely impacted their academic opportunities. There will not doubt be additional disciplinary procedures against at least some of the students identified in this important piece.

One thing Columbia and the other Universities might consider is a public statement saying flat-out that divestment is not on the table nor is severing ties with Israeli institutions and that, if that is unacceptable to certain students, then perhaps the institution where they now find themselves is not a good fit and they should find an alternative.

Minouche was raised as a Muslim? How exactly did you find that out? If Minouche was raised as a Muslim, then I was right about her after all. As was the Jewish Daily Forward.

And if that's true then Minouche hid that very significant part of her biography when she testified before Congress. The sin of omission. Just a nice Chrisitan girl singing Joy to the World at the Great Pyramid of Giza (or is it Gaza?).

Anyway, Minouche is hanging on by a thread. Not even the airhead Hamas groupies who paint their toenails while sitting in a pup tent facing Butler Library --not even they want her now. Perhaps at this very moment Minouche is praying to Allah to save her neck.

Regardless of whether or not she's Muslim, she lied before Congress. And she was clearly brainwashed during her time at woke institutions, including the World Bank and the London School of Economics.

And incidentally, you may have faith in the "consequences" that are being imposed, but I do not. Some number of students who were so publicly "suspended," are actually still on campus and still raising hell on the lawn in front of Butler Library. The suspension is a joke.

Just an aside re: truth abt. Minouche. A few months ago kicked 2 groups off campus. Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voices for Palestine. Then student groups went to the Board and demanded her dismissal. Like who do they think they are. If they don’t like Columbia ‘s policies they should leave. There would be many qualified applicants especially smart Jews who would live to have their spot. And Egyptians have no love lost for Palestinians. What law prevents NYPD to enter private university grounds when violence is occurring? Do cops have to be invited to enter a private home when domestic violence is taking place.

None. Police have the absolute right to enter any private property when a crime is being committed. The university is full of it on this, and NYC too cowardly to call the bluff.

Expand full comment

Thank you!

Expand full comment
Apr 22·edited Apr 22

I would think that is so but even Mayor Adams says the NYPD is not allowed to enter Colombia unless asked. I don't think he'd say that if it weren't true. My guess is that no crime is in progress that would permit NYPD's presence. (Yes the assaults written about on these pages are crimes but NYPD cannot enter the campus on the grounds of pre-crime. Perhaps they could enter campus to arrest the assailants post-assault, but that is not the same thing as just having a presence on campus.)

Expand full comment

I'm sure NYC and Columbia have a political agreement: Columbia will do its own routine security and policing so as not to waste NYPD resources, and in return, NYPD will stay off campus unless summoned. I imagine that's what the mayor meant. That agreement would, as you said, keep NYPD from having a routine presence on campus.

But that's only a political agreement. Legally, police including NYPD, can go onto any property, public or private, if a crime is being committed.

Expand full comment

"if a crime is being committed" being the operative statement. Protesting and hate speech are not violations of the law. Assault is, but the police can't show up on the crime until it is in progress or already happened. I don't think this is political, I think it is the law.

Expand full comment

Interesting discussing this with you, mm. I found this article after our last exchange, because I wanted to see how the town-gown interface works at Columbia, and thought it might interest you too. I believe you're largely correct: because Columbia is private property, NYPD cannot legally conduct routine patrols or police the campus as it would public streets. In its place,

Columbia relies on its own security personnel to "police" campus affairs. They're not sworn officers, though, and can't make arrests.

Since Jewish students are being openly assaulted, the problem is not a lack of NYPD, but a lack of security. Since Columbia doesn't want NYPD on campus, it is obligated to provide all the security required in volatile situations. Columbia doesn't appear to be doing that.

Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, I attended Northern Illinois University. It faced the same issues during the Vietnam War protests: who would police the campus when violence threatened? NIU had a security department, and decided to upgrade it to a police department. Security officers became sworn police officers under State of Illinois regulations, and to this day are the University Police, not campus security, with full police powers. They and City of DeKalb Police work with each other when circumstances require a heavier police presence.

It's arguably two crimes. First the documented physical assaults of at least two protesters while they were happening. Second, aren't there laws prohibiting law enforcement from doing nothing to stop assaults taking place right next to them?

I can remember instances where cops got charged and convicted for NOT stopping assaults. Why is this case different? Why not charge the Columbia U police for the same negligence or dereliction?

Expand full comment

Actually, police do need to be invited to a college campus. Colleges have their own tribunals regarding campus rapes, students cheating, vandalizing, etc. This ensures that a black mark won't be on a student's public record. If the police are called in it is followed by real charges. Colleges try to protect students from reality.

Expand full comment

Can you provide a cite to support your claim? The police certainly do not wait to rush a campus or any institution when gun violence or a riot or fire breaks out.

I can see this at Disney world, which is (or was) a separate political subdivision. But unless Columbia is a separate political subdivision, don't see how this could be the case.

Why is this different

Expand full comment

Hello, I work at an ivy and can tell you that when a student breaks our code of conduct, it is resolved by the college. The student is brought before a board that consists of one or more administrators, professors, a student representative, a class Dean, and if serious enough, a title 9 lawyer. We have an arrangement with the fire dept for fire issues, and if there is an active shooter on campus our alert system registers with the town police. None of this is unique to my institution.

Expand full comment

Yet many college campus police do not have the training or equipment to solve crimes, control demonstrations, etc. There is also pressure on campus administrators to under report crimes to statistically imply that the campus is safe,

It will be interesting to see what crime statistics Columbia and other schools will report.

Expand full comment

Absolutely. Statistics also play a role in the annual "Top Colleges in the United States." If I'm correct, those ratings also take into account the retention rate (hence, students may return and take classes after being suspended) and the amount of alum donations they receive.

Agree, it appears that downgrading criminal activity and failing to expel perpetrators enhances the college rating. What an accurate way to portray a college( huge eye roll)

Colleges have their own lawyers. Believe me, this is as frustrating for me as it is for anyone. Ivy's are committed to helping students and keeping their records clean. Why should Jews have to hide their necklaces and yarmulkes to simply walk down the street now? Why are all of our politicians (from the local levels up) allowing these animals, these so-called “peaceful” protesters to assault and harass innocent peace-living people so freely without any consequences?

Columbia, like other universities, has an obligation to protect its students. So does the NYPD. If someone were murdered on campus, you can be sure that the cops will be there regardless of whether the president requests it. It’s a felony, and police are required to respond to felonies. So, as it turns out, is assault and battery, which is plainly the case here. NYPD and Eric “the Wonderful” Adams are completely incorrect hiding behind the putative rule of engagement requiring the Columbia administration to request the cops before they can respond.

Bottom line: assuming the truth and accuracy of the essay, both Columbia U and the NYPD are grossly criminally and civilly negligent. Lawyers are necessary here. Only a fool would forego chasing down these bastards. ALL of them.

It’s pure insanity to see the Far Left WOKE acting EXACTLY like the Far Right KKKers! BOTH cover their face, BOTH hate Jews, BOTH hate America, and BOTH promote destruction of Israel!

Who knew, “The enemy of my enemy truly is my friend AND comrade” Hitler would be so proud!

The leftist march through the institutions, which many Jews have been a part of, is now biting you in the ass, because the left always eats itself in its voracious appetite for fresh new causes / enemies.

Will Jews see this and vote for the party that isn’t captured by people that hate them? Will Jews remember that MAGA people stand with Israel while the Ivy League dons can barely contain their contempt?
